H-LAM/T: the augmentation system is more than the tool
Engelbart's 1962 framework. Augmentation isn't the tool alone, it is Human + Language + Artifacts + Methodology + Training, co-evolving. UX has spent forty years polishing the Artifact and ignoring the other three.
H-LAM/T: the augmentation system is more than the tool
In his 1962 conceptual framework Augmenting Human Intellect, Douglas Engelbart described the entity being augmented as H-LAM/T: a Human using Language, Artifacts, Methodology, in which he is Trained.
Four components, equally load-bearing:
- Human. The person (or group) being augmented.
- Language. The concepts and symbols the human uses to model the world.
- Artifacts. Physical and digital tools (keyboard, chord keyset, mouse, NLS itself).
- Methodology. Procedures and practices for using the tools effectively.
- Training. Capability development that turns competence into mastery.
The augmented entity is the whole H-LAM/T system, not the human alone and not the artifact alone. The “intelligence amplifier” is L + A + M + T together.
Why this matters now
Most UX practice for the past forty years has optimised the Artifact (interface, interaction, visual design) and quietly ignored the other three. Language was left to product copy. Methodology was left to internal training departments. Training was left to onboarding flows. The artifact carried all the augmentation load.
LLMs invite us to redesign Language (prompts, schemas, terms of art), Methodology (workflows that combine humans and models), and Training (how teams learn to think with these tools) in the same loop as the artifact. The H-LAM/T frame says: that’s the whole point. Don’t just build a better chatbot. Build the augmentation system.

This is the deep frame behind why “designing the LLM interface” is too small a question. The interface is the Artifact. Without Language, Methodology, and Training designed alongside it, the augmentation never compounds.
