The bewitching AI: the illusion of communication with LLMs

A Wittgensteinian analysis showing LLMs lack the constancy and commitment required for genuine dialogue. The appearance of conversation is an illusion built on pattern completion, not communicative intent.

A Wittgensteinian analysis showing LLMs lack the constancy required for genuine dialogue. Bottazzi and Ferrario argue that communication requires a stable speaker with commitments that persist across time. LLMs have no such constancy: each response is generated fresh, with no memory of commitment and no stake in what was said before. The bewitchment is that it looks like conversation while the conditions for conversation are absent.
