Kane Simms: the future of conversational AI — A buzz going on around moving away from intents-only bots, towards a more semantic, graph based approach.

Michael McTear: CUIs to support mental health in sparsely populated areas — Developing chatbots for social good, available in Scottish Gaelic and Finnish.

Arash Eshghi: Handling miscommunication in conversational AI — Possibly my favorite talk! A great combination of concepts from Conversation Analysis applied to improve conversational ease and naturalness of voicebots.

Women in Voice panel — Thoughtful discussion on making technology available that supports non-English languages.

Michael McTernan: can chatbots save people’s lives? — A moving talk on how chatbots can support young adults with mental health challenges.

Angus Addlesee: Conversational AI Accessibility — This one blew my mind! Research on creating an incremental semantic parser that re-evaluates an utterance iteratively and dynamically adjusts the response. Using conversational cues like stammers, rephrases, disfluencies to adjust your bot’s response on the fly. And the technology that makes this possible? Graphs! Semantic webs!
